SEPT 10, 2020 // 10 HAMMOND CIR (VERSION III, PROTOOLS DEMO)
SAN FRANCISCO, CALIFORNIA
****NOTE: This is the wildest one, and the one where I have the strongest feelings and the most changes. I’ve tried to elucidate them clearly below. Having made my ideas and feelings clear, I’m now fine with whatever erasures, rearrangements, and additions you will bring. If you have questions or confusions, please ask. If you have a feeling, follow it. We’ve shown discipline. There is an opportunity now to be creative, strange, and outside the norms. Let’s open the field.
💀
-I really like the instrumental composing I did that begins on measures 29, after the first chorus, and runs through the beginning of verse two.
-Relatedly, I really like the composing, particularly on the dueling piano and dirty jazz organ, that goes from measure 46 and the line “nocturne and you’re face to face again” through chorus two. Measure 49 in particular, where I was really banging on the piano and organ, I think is amongst my best work to date. It is the sincere emotion underneath the drole delivery of the line “locked up in the basement, back in second grade man.” Both the playing and the cord voicing communicate what I’m trying to say.
-The piano player in this band, is my poor impersonation of you. I was trying to bounce with the drummer. Sometimes it works, sometimes it needs refinement.
-The guitar player in this band is me playing over my head. Ideally guitar person fits nicely with bass, and piano people. It might mean re tracking the part better composed, or maybe treating a particular hook like a sample from a record? I should note that I had this for a long time w/ just the guitar, bass, and drums and it sounded cool. Maybe there is a part where it is just this layer and then the others are added on?
-The bass is you. Your old line was excellent, and I enjoyed it. Probably you will need to revision it to make it fit with the more complicated story here. I’ve already started chopping and rearranging. I think you will find the new way.
-I really like the music box. It’s simple and obvious but I think it works and sticks out in the right way. The music box is a character from one of those books that’s in a Lighthouse where the turbulent weather lasts a lot of the year.
-The drum part feels correct to me. I’ve chopped it a little bit to make it align with the new ideas.
✞
-The vocal needs refinement. Some of the lines aren’t even cleanly delivered yet. Some sound very good to me. I’m thinking I’ll do the final re-tracking once I have your re-arrangement. I’m open to and appreciative of feedback for delivery and rewrites.
-Overall, there is tons going on. You may want to edit. You may want to replay. You may want to mute. You may want to subtract. You may want to add. Play simultaneously without attachment and without mercy.
